Empowering Malaysia’s Digital Transformation: Microsoft Announces First Cloud Region in Malaysia

On May 28, 2025, Microsoft announced the general availability of Malaysia West, its first cloud region in the country. The milestone marks a significant step in empowering Malaysia’s inclusive digital and AI transformation. The Malaysia West Cloud Region, strategically located in Greater Kuala Lumpur, will offer scalable, available, and resilient cloud services within-country data residency, high levels of security, and lower latency.

Key Highlights:

  • AI-Ready Infrastructure: The cloud region will provide access to modern services for productivity, data analytics, cybersecurity, computing, and storage, including Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365.
  • Government Support: YB Gobind Singh Deo, Malaysia’s Minister of Digital, emphasized the importance of leveraging digital and AI technologies to enhance Malaysia’s position as a regional leader in the digital and AI economy.
  • Strategic Partnerships: PETRONAS, along with other organizations like FinHero, SCICOM Berhad, Senang, SIRIM Berhad, TNG Digital, and Veeam, are already leveraging the new cloud region to advance their digital and AI transformation efforts.

Economic Impact:

  • Revenue Generation: The IDC projects that Microsoft, its partners, and cloud-using customers will generate US$10.9 billion in new revenues over the next four years, with the cloud region accounting for approximately 16.9% of this total.
  • Job Creation: Over 37,000 direct and indirect jobs will be added, including nearly 6,000 skilled IT jobs

AI innovation Incentives:

  • BINA AI Malaysia: Microsoft unveiled BINA AI Malaysia to drive the next phase of Malaysia’s AI transformation, including the establishment of the Microsoft National AI Innovation Center.
  • AIForMYFuture: Microsoft aims to equip 800,000 Malaysians with AI-related skills by the end of 2025, with 400,000 people already skills across various sectors.
  • Microsoft’s Commitment: Laurence Si, Managing Director of Microsoft Malaysia, expressed excitement.
